Comcast could chase cord-cutters with 'Xfinity Instant TV'

...
engadget.com | Mar 28 @ 10:20

While recent rumors indicated Comcast has signed deals preparing to compete with other video services nationwide, Reuters says that "Xfinity Instant TV" will only be available for Comcast internet customers when it launches later this year. In something that's probably not a coincidence, it launched the same month Comcast announced that for the first time ever it had more customers subscribing to internet service than TV. For years we've seen Comcast preparing to distribute video like an internet service instead of traditional cable methods, and now there's word it will roll the project out widely. It's an expanded version of what we already know as Comcast Stream, the $15 per month cloud DVR-equipped package it's been testing in a few areas since 2015.

Watch Spider-Man: Homecoming’s new trailer, featuring cosplay among friends

...
techcrunch.com | Mar 28 @ 10:17

Basically, it does nothing to discourage my excitement for the movie, which really does look like it really understands and conveys the Spider-Man character and the spirit of the comic book series. Spider-Man: Homecoming is arriving on July 7, but you don’t have to wait to see more from the movie in the latest trailer. The new look gives us a bit more insight into the motivation of Michael Keaton’s Vulture (he’s like the blue collar joe to Tony Stark’s one-percenters, maybe) and more insight into the film’s sense of humor.

Cognoa raises $11.6 million for digital health platform that spots early signs of autism in kids

venturebeat.com | Mar 28 @ 10:14

Digital health platform Cognoa has raised $11.6 million from existing investor Morningside, taking the company’s total funding to more than $20 million since its inception in 2013. Elsewhere, Livongo recently raised $52.5 million to grow its digital health platform for people with chronic conditions, while Vida Health closed a $18 million round to connect people with chronic diseases to health coaches. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Cognoa helps parents concerned about their kids’ development through a screening and support platform that makes it easier to spot developmental delays such as might appear with autism. Back in August, Accolade closed a whopping $93.6 million funding round for a platform that guides employees through the “costly, complex, and fragmented” world of health care. While both companies are open to individuals, they’re also both heavily invested in targeting companies that aim to improve the health of their employees.

Spider-Man: Homecoming's latest trailer shows the Vulture wreaking havoc

...
theverge.com | Mar 28 @ 10:14

The latest Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer has landed, giving us the closest look we’ve seen of the Vulture (Michael Keaton) yet. The trailer is yet another showcase for Holland’s take on Spider-Man, who’s a lot younger and hungrier for approval than past cinematic versions of the character. But when Keaton’s Adrian Toomes arrives on the scene, Peter quickly finds himself in over his head. Here, we see Peter Parker (Tom Holland) having fun balancing his life with his newfound duties as the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, all while getting advice from Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). And it also looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of Iron Man in the film, meaning that there are acting heavyweights aplenty in this outing.

This sci-fi short film turns augmented reality into a creepy psychothriller

...
thenextweb.com | Mar 28 @ 10:12

In what could have easily been an episode from the popular series Black Mirror, Strange Beasts is a cautionary – but equally riveting – tale of the macabre dangers of getting too immersed in augmented reality. Combining traditional filmmaking with advanced visual effects and optical trickeries, the movie puts a psychological spin on augmented reality by taking us inside the deteriorating mind of a man lost in technology. Watch Strange Beasts in the video section above. As artists and filmmakers continue to integrate new technologies into their practice, the complicated interplay between the real world and augmented reality has gradually turned into one of the most compelling motifs contemporary directors seek to explore in their movies. But things quickly take a turn for the worse once the boundary between what’s real and fake starts to wash away.

IMAX and Warner Bros. to create VR experiences based on Justice League films

...
techcrunch.com | Mar 28 @ 10:07

The upcoming Justice League movie looks very bad, based on its new trailer – in fact, it could be mistaken for its own parody film. The VR project Warner Bros. has planned for Justice League includes a series of original VR experiences, created in partnership with IMAX and with an exclusive first launch window in IMAX’s new VR centers. In addition to a VR tie-in for Justice League itself, IMAX and Warner Bros. will also be creating unique VR features for Aquaman, and for a third future disastrous DC comics movie adaptation to be revealed later. That’s not stopping Warner Bros. from exploring all possible media tie-ins to capitalize on what it hopes will be its success at the box office, including using virtual reality. These will provide content fodder for IMAX’s VR Centres, the first of which launched in LA in January, with five more planned for NYC, California, the UK and Shanghai.

Razer’s new Blade Pro gaming laptop gets updated display and faster memory

...
venturebeat.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

“Each refinement of the Razer Blade Pro moves us closer to an ultimate desktop replacement.”Here are the full specs for the new Blade: “The Razer Blade Pro is a top-level laptop providing an excellent THX viewing mode and audio experience,” THX chief executive Ty Ahmad-Taylor said in a statement. Despite that power, however, Razer has still designed the Blade Pro so that it’s less than 1-inch thick. Razer is promising to deliver an amazing display in its next gaming laptop. The THX Mobile Certification means that the Razer Blade Pro’s 17-inch screen meets a certain threshold for resolution, color accuracy, and performance.

Twitter brings pre-roll ads to Periscope live videos

...
venturebeat.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

Twitter is doing more to help broadcasters monetize their Periscope live videos. The company announced that it is extending its pre-roll ads, which were previously limited to videos on Twitter, to Periscope. Adding support for Periscope can help keep Twitter competitive against YouTube and Facebook, both of which already offers advertising solutions for broadcasters. Extending the feature to Periscope also provides additional ad load for Twitter to sell against and will hopefully increase revenue for the company. “Ads on Periscope content are a new way to use live and on-demand video to reach audiences at the most relevant moments,” Mike Folgner, group project manager for Periscope, wrote in a blog post.

Razer’s acquisition of THX turned the new Blade Pro into a certified production machine

...
techcrunch.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

The longer answer I got was that a THX certified version of the Blade Pro only took two prototypes. To seal the deal, Razer will ship the Blade Pro with a calibration app from THX that covers everything from gamut to contrast. The parts of the Blade Pro that haven’t changed at all are the Chroma (read: multicolored) backlit keyboard and touchpad, NVIDIA’s GTX 1080 graphics card and port selection. As for availability: the new Blade Pro will cost $3,999 at Amazon, Best Buy or from Razer starting in April, with shipping “later that month”. Visually, the biggest change to the Blade Pro is the screen: the 17.3 inch 4K display remains, but it’s THX tuned using the same process for production-level screens.

Twitter introduces pre-roll ads to Periscope videos

...
techcrunch.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

Twitter is announcing a new ad unit — pre-roll ads on Periscope videos. PeriscopePeriscope“For creators and publishers that useto go live on Twitter every day, these pre-roll ads present a new way to monetize their video content,” Folgner writes. The company has already been rolling out ways for advertisers to create custom campaigns around live Periscope video, but a standard pre-roll ad should be the most straightforward option. That means it’ll probably be used by wider range of publishers, creators and advertisers than what we’ve seen so far. In a blog post, Periscope Group Project Manager Mike Folgner says the ads will appear in a way that’s “organic to how people already consume that content on the platform.” Basically, publishers will have the option to run a short video ad that plays before you watch their Periscope videos (both live broadcasts and replays) on Twitter.

Watch what happens when Spotify gives unknown music acts a big push

...
recode.net | Mar 28 @ 10:00

Spotify is the equivalent of a music store, stacked with more than 30 million singles. If you’re one of the 20,000 acts that work with AWAL, you can learn more about that here; the rest of us can just wish other labels shared streaming data for their acts. If you pay Spotify $10 a month, you can grab any of the singles you want, whenever you want. The company is sharing this data because it wants to promote a new app it’s giving out to its acts, which lets them check on their streaming data on their phones. Spotify has more than than 2 billion playlists, most of them created by Spotify’s users.

Twitter will start selling pre-roll ads ahead of Periscope videos

...
recode.net | Mar 28 @ 10:00

Video ads in general tend to be more lucrative than static ads, and other services like Facebook and Snapchat are also competing for video ad dollars. Ads will also run before Periscope videos that are no longer live, but still on Twitter. It missed Wall Street’s revenue estimates last quarter, and more video ads could help. Amplify video ads have been a big part of Twitter’s media and advertising push since layoffs and a restructuring of its sales team last fall. So not all Periscope video will be eligible for advertisements.

Razer upgrades 17-inch Blade Pro to Kaby Lake

...
theverge.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

The 4K G-Sync touchscreen display is another premium part in an already premium laptop. Razer went another direction with its 17.3-inch Blade Pro laptop, offering a unique mechanical keyboard design, a tiny power brick, and an astonishing four hours of battery in a sub-inch-thick form factor. Razer also "upgraded" the price: the laptop now has a $3,999 starting price, compared to $3,699 for the original. Now Razer is upgrading last year's model with an overclockable quad-core Kaby Lake processor, faster memory (2667MHz), and THX certification for both the screen and the audio jack. Razer says the laptop should have the same thermal performance as the last generation, even with overclocking and the faster RAM.

...
theverge.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

Twitter said that initially, Periscope ads will only run in front of high-profile live video, such as fashion shows or sports games. Periscope ads will come in a variety of lengths and cannot be skipped, Twitter said. You’re about to see ads in front of Periscope videos. Twitter said today it would start monetizing its 2-year-old live streaming service, beginning with pre-roll video on both live and archived videos. Video advertising, which commands higher ad rates than other formats, is at the centerpiece of the company’s plans.

engadget.com | Mar 28 @ 10:00

The new Blade Pro goes on sale in the US and Europe in April and rolling out worldwide later in the month, starting at $4,000 (£3,800/€4,500). The Blade Pro still weighs 7.7 pounds and measures less than an inch thick. THX's video certification process was used to calibrate and test the laptop's resolution, color accuracy and playback performance. Combined with the laptop's top-of-the-line hardware, this certification cements the Blade Pro's position as both a VR/gaming and design/production rig. The sound certification measured voltage output, frequency response, distortion, signal-to-noise ratio and crosstalk.

Cord blood contains what are known as stem cells and progenitor cells, which can give rise to oxygen-carrying red blood cells, infection-fighting white blood cells, and clot-forming platelets. Tencent, Asia’s second highest valued tech firm, has bought a five percent share in Tesla. While that interest in messaging makes sense since Tencent’s operates China’s dominant chat app — WeChat — it isn’t immediately clear whether the Tesla investment has strategic undertones. The news itself sent Tesla’s share price up three percent in pre-market trading. According to a filing, the Chinese firm scooped up 8,167,544 shares for around $1.7 billion to become one of Tesla’s largest shareholders. Tencent just had a record year of revenue growth after it reported total sales of $21.9 billion for 2016.

His team’s technology, dubbed the Intelligent Autopilot System, undergoes the same training human pilots go through. Assuming these systems someday clear those regulatory hurdles and roll out to commercial airlines, they could provide a stepping stone between the eras of human pilots and what comes next. That education relies on supervised machine learning, which treats the young autopilot as a human apprentice going to a flying school. On the map of buzz-worthy tech, artificial intelligence sprawls over a particularly expansive terrain: from digital home assistants to self-driving cars, battlefield tactics to investment guidance. As for the path to actual deployment in commercial aircraft, Baomar says that the technology isn’t really the issue as much as the regulatory processes that would be required to permit it.
